12 violations at New Star Chinese and Thai Restaurant in Bartonsville; Rice cooking equipment with encrusted grease and soil accumulation

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Food Safety and Laboratory Services conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on 5/6/2020. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations the New Star Chinese and Thai Restaurant was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 12 violations were found.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • Observed an accumulation of grease and grime on the inside of the exhaust hood.
  • The handwash sink located in the prep area observed with build up of filth and food residue and not cleaned before use, and frequently throughout the day.
  • Chlorine chemical sanitizer residual detected in the final sanitizer rinse cycle of the low temperature sanitizing dishwasher was 0 ppm, and not 50-100 ppm as required. Discontinue use of dishmachine for sanitizing and set up manual sanitization until dish machine is repaired and sanitizing properly.
  • Card board boxes, a single use material reused for further food storage. PIC to discontinue the practices.
  • Floor under all equipment is soiled with grease, old dried food, and in need of cleaning.
  • Observed knives and /or cleavers stored between table edges or between tables, an area not easily cleanable & sanitized.
  • Observed food stored directly on the floor in walk in refrigerator area, rather than 6 inches off of the floor as required.
  • The Person in Charge does not have adequate knowledge of food safety in this food facility as evidenced by this non-compliant inspection.
  • Observed rice cooking equipment with encrusted grease and soil accumulation.
  • Food in the freezer area stored open with no covering.
  • Accumulated grease, old food debris on the non-food contact surfaces of equipment, shelving, and cabinets in the kitchen area.
  • Plumbing system not maintained in good repair – water is completely shut off at employee toilet room due to faucet leaking.
