The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture¬† conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on 4/14/2020.** As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations SHOP ‘n SAVE was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 12 violations were found.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • Several employees not wearing proper hair restraints, such as beard covers.
  • Prepackaged hoagies on display in deli area are not labeled properly with the ingredients list. Stuffing label on chicken packages does not identify wheat as an allergen ingredient.
  • One deli slicer, a food contact surface, was observed to have dry food residue and was not clean to sight and touch.
  • Outside grease handling unit was extremely dirty, sticky and possibly attracting insects and rodents. REPEAT VIOLATION (5-14-18, 5-13-19)
  • Meat walk-in cooler door frame on left side is damaged and taped. Dairy cooler walls on both sides of door are peeling back at bottom.
  • Person in Charge does not have adequate knowledge of food safety in this food facility as evidenced by this non-compliant inspection.
  • Observed the following items with an accumulation of dust, dirt, food residue/debris on non-food contact surfaces: fryers, interiors of deli cases and hot holding unit, bakery walk-in freezer floor, filters in deli hood, breading & sprinkle containers, shelf under prep table and deli walk-in cooler floor.
  • Old unused equipment/shelving stored in back storage area and should be removed from food facility. REPEAT VIOLATION (6-23-17, 5-14-18, 5-13-19)
  • Floors in following areas are dirty and in need of cleaning: dry storage, bakery/deli prep area and around 3-part sink. Wall behind bread slicer has black debris.
  • Cartons of eggs stored above packages of English muffins in the retail cooler.
  • Commercially processed refrigerated, ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food (deli meats) located in the deli cases and held more than 24 hours are not being marked with the date they were opened. REPEAT VIOLATION (5-13-19)
  • Exterior of bakery oven has debris build up. REPEAT VIOLATION (5-14-18, 5-13-19)
