Bella Italia bumbles inspection in Ardmore; Rodent-like droppings observed near mixer in kitchen, Fly-like insects observed in facility

The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services Office of Public Health (MCOPH) conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on 2/24/2020. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations Bella Italia was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 13 violations were found and include one or more violations determined to be food borne illness risk factors.

Oddly enough, the restaurant was inspected following a complaint on February 19, 2020. The inspector found no violations making the following statement:

MCOPH received complaint of roach-like insect observed in front counter by pizza display
observations:

-no evidence of pest at time of inspection

-facility receives professional pest control every 2 weeks

-facility has 10 business days to submit most current professional pest control report

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • Employee beverage stored on food prep surface.

  • Employee handled ready to eat food with bare hands.

  • Raw shelled eggs stored above ready to eat food items in walk-in refrig(2xrepeat)

  • Proper date marking lacking on prepared food items in secondary containers and/or packaging.

  • Rodent-like droppings observed near mixer in kitchen. Facility has 10 business days to provide proof of next professional pest control treatment to MCOPH

  • Fly-like insects observed in facility. Facility has 10 business days to provide proof of next professional pest control treatment to MCOPH

  • Insect control devices observed above food prep table in kitchen/food prep area.

  • Food stored on floor kitchen and walk-in refrigerator

  • Food handler lacking hair/beard restraint

  • Wet wiping cloths not stored in a sanitizing solution

  • Insulation on condenser hose in walk-in refrigerator unclean

  • Door gasket on walk-in refrigerator back room unclean

  • Floors in back room unclean
