The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services Office of Public Health (MCOPH) conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on 8/19/2020. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations the Chili’s Grill & Bar in Cheltenham Township* was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 21 violations were found and include one or more violations determined to be food borne illness risk factors.

According to reporting by the Philadelphia Inquirer this restaurant has been found, “In Compliance” one time since December 2016 and that sole occasion was a reinspection of an “Out of Compliance” inspection:

  • Dec 15, 2016- 6 violations including 4 food borne risk factor violations cited at a regular inspection.
  • May 18, 2017- 10 violations including 4 food borne risk factor violations cited at a regular inspection.
  • Oct 12, 2017- 9 violations including 2 food borne risk factor violations cited at a regular inspection.
  • Aug 21, 2018- 12 violations including 5 food borne risk factor violations cited at a regular inspection.
  • Apr 18, 2019- 13 violations including 6 food borne risk factor violations cited at a regular inspection.
  • Sep 17, 2019- Complaint inspection- 22 violations including 5 food borne risk factor violations cited.
  • Oct 1, 2019- Re-inspection finds 5 “Lack of Good Retail Practices” violations and no food borne illness risk factor violations.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • At time of inspection several employees in the facility observed not wearing face masks properly with noses not being covered. Facility was instructed that face masks must cover nose and mouth at all times while in facility. Facility must correct and maintain all noted violations.
  • Facility does not have original food operational license on site and license not posted in public view. Obtain current original license and post or request a duplicate copy from Norristown MCOPH.
  • Facility lacking sign stating “inspection reports are available upon request” posted in public view. Facility emailed sign during inspection.
  • (2 times repeat violation)Facility lacking a CFSM Certificate from MCOPH. Facility has 5 business days to apply for certificate to Norristown via mail. EHS emailed copy of application and fee schedule at the time of inspection. Failure to comply may lead to legal action.
  • No soap provided at hand sink at end of cook’s line.
  • Hand wash sink at dish machine blocked by rags in basin.
  • No cold water supply provided at bar hand wash sink. a 24 hour follow-up inspection will be conducted pending repairs to verify cold and hot water are supplied to hand wash sink.
  • No hand wash reminder sign posted at bar hand sink.
  • 3 compartment sink at bar not set up properly with sanitizer solution in middle basin. Facility was instructed on proper wash, rinse, sanitize, and air dry procedures during inspection.
  • Interior of soda gun head at bar observed with black residue accumulation.
  • Desserts in 1 door under counter dessert refrigerator recorded with internal temperature of 62F. Facility voluntarily discarded all TCS desserts during inspection.
  • 1 door under counter dessert refrigerator recorded with ambient temperature of 58F. Facility voluntarily discarded all TCS foods in unit. Facility must immediately stop using the unit. Facility may not use the unit until serviced by licensed professional, AND unit is operating at 41F or below, AND written permission is granted by MCOPH. Send service report to the email provided. Failure to comply or await permission before using unit may lead to legal action.
  • Grill station drawer refrigerator recorded with ambient temperature of 51F. TCS foods in unit recorded at 46F. Facility moved all TCS foods to a working unit. Facility must immediately stop using the unit. Facility may not use the unit until serviced by licensed professional, AND unit is operating at 41F or below, AND written permission is granted by MCOPH. Send service report to the email provided. Failure to comply or await permission before using unit may lead to legal action.
  • Commercially vacuum sealed salmon not removed from vacuum seal packaging before thawing in walk-in refrigerator. Facility voluntarily discarded approximately 10 portions.
  • Tongs stored on conveyor oven door handle.
  • Portable cutting board observed with melted grooves and no longer smooth and easily cleanable.
  • Ice accumulation observed on interior of walk-in freezer.
  • Bottom interior of expo line cooler observed with food spills.
  • Exterior of sliding doors on ice machine observed with black residue.
  • Bottom interior of bar 2 door refrigerator observed with drink spills.
  • Refrigeration door gaskets observed with food accumulation on food prep refrigerator on cook’s line closest to dish machine.
  • Grease hood filters not put in place above grill station and fryer station. Filters must be in place while using cooking equipment at all times.

*The restaurant has a Philadelphia address but is located in Montgomery County and should not be confused with the Chili’s actually located in Philadelphia County.
