21 violations at New Garden Chinese Restaurant in Cheltenham; Soiled sifter hung from bathroom door closer

The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services Office of Public Health (MCOPH) conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on 6/26/2020. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations New Garden Chinese Restaurant was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 21 violations were found and include one or more violations determined to be food borne illness risk factors.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • Many employee open beverage containers found stored on food prep surfaces and employees observed drinking from open containers on cook’s line.

  • Employee food bowl observed on cook’s line.

  • Lacking hand wash reminder sign at kitchen hand wash sink.

  • (3XR)Raw shell eggs stored over ready to eat foods in walk-in refrigerator. Failure to correct and maintain repeat violations could lead to legal action.

  • Many food items found uncovered in walk-in refrigerator.

  • Can opener blade observed with heavy dried food accumulation.

  • Garlic in oil stored outside of refrigeration on cooks line with internal temperature of 85F. Facility voluntarily discarded at time of inspection.

  • Discard date marking lacking on prepared/opened TCS ready to eat foods held under refrigeration longer than 24 hours. Discard date not to exceed 7 days from prep/open date. Facility emailed date marking regulations during inspection.

  • First aid supplies stored on shelf above food prep refrigerator.

  • Chemical spray bottles not labeled under 3 basin sink.

  • Front door observed propped open without screen protection. (Gives access to vermin)

  • Sticky fly strip found hanging from ceiling in dry storage area.

  • Food containers in walk-in refrigerator found lined with absorbent paper materials.

  • Micro fiber cloth lining under cutting board.

  • Knives found stored by stabbing them into a large piece of round Styrofoam on shelf in kitchen. Facility removed Styrofoam during inspection.

  • Clean aprons hung at mop sink. (splash risk)

  • Egg crates re-used for drainage of fried foods at fryer.

  • Absorbent paper lining observed on shelving holding sauce bottles on cook’s line.

  • Plastic string material found attached to sink stoppers for food prep sink and tied to above shelving. Facility removed during inspection.

  • Hand wash sink in kitchen no longer sealed/caulked to the wall.

  • Employee cell phone stored on prep table next to slice machine.
