23 violations at Giulianos Deli in Lansdale says Montco Health Department

The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services Office of Public Health (MCOPH) conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on January 27, 2020. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations the Giulianos Deli was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 23 violations were found and include one or more violations determined to be food borne illness risk factors.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • 1Facility placed 1 medium-sized white mini refrigerator taken out of service during inspection dated 07/24/2019 back into service without submitting a completed professional work order to MCOPH, and without receiving written permission to place unit back into service. Facility may face legal action for failure to comply with directives.
  • When questioned, PIC stated that right-hand basin of three compartment sink was the designated sanitize basin. Basin observed filled with soiled dishes and utensils at time of inspection. EHS explained proper set-up of three compartment sink during inspection.
  • Facility lacking a CFSM certificate from MCOPH. Facility was granted 6 months to obtain at previous inspection dated 07/24/2019. Application was emailed during inspection. Facility must submit application with payment within 48 hours. Facility may face legal action for failure to comply with established timeframes.
  • 1Both hand washing sinks in kitchen observed with non-functional drains. Facility stated that it has been using three compartment sink to wash hands. Facility must fully repair handwashing sinks. A 24-hour follow-up inspection will be conducted to ensure that sinks are fully functional.
  • 3 pints of Clover Farms whole milk observed in retail beverage refrigerator with sell-by dates of 01/24/2020. Facility voluntarily removed items from sale during inspection.
  • Block of cheese observed being stored on countertop, outside of refrigeration. Cheese observed with an internal temperature of 47F during inspection. Facility relocated cheese to refrigeration during inspection.
  • Pork roll observed being stored on countertop, outside of refrigeration. Pork roll observed with an internal temperature of 55F. Facility voluntarily discarded pork roll during inspection.
  • Large quantity of raw sausage stored on prep table, outside of refrigeration. Sausage observed with internal temperatures between 48-56F at time of inspection. Facility voluntarily discarded sausage during inspection.
  • Prepared and opened TCS ready to eat foods held in establishment under refrigeration for more than 24 hours missing required discard date marking not to exceed 7 days from the prep/open date. Facility was emailed date marking regulations during inspection.
  • Unlabeled chemical spray bottles observed stored beneath three-compartment sink.
  • Hand sanitizer stored on prep table in kitchen.
  • Fly light installed above drainboard adjacent to sanitizer basin of three compartment sink.
  • Food handler observed donning bracelet. Food handlers are permitted to wear one plain band ring only.
  • Facility observed storing opened sleeves of single-use containers in unfinished room in basement with exposed ceiling insulation. Facility must relocate items to approved area.
  • Hand washing sinks in prep area and in employee restroom not adequately sealed to wall.
  • Facility observed re-using bread bags with printed ink labels to store sliced deli meats. These bags are not designed to be cleaned, sanitized and reused. All foods must be stored in food-grade bags or containers.
  • Torn door gaskets observed at retail refrigerator doors.
  • Facility observed lining beverage shelving with cardboard in walk-in refrigerator.
  • Facility observed using bungee cord to secure large 1 door reach-in freezer door. Cord is not easily cleanable.
  • Exterior exhaust fan in kitchen observed with dust, grease and/or soot accumulation. Unused permanent fan fixture near fryer observed with dust accumulation. EHS contacted Lansdale Borough Fire Marshal during inspection.
  • Facility was granted 6 months to install a mop sink at change of ownership inspection conducted 07/24/2019. Mop sink not installed at time of inspection. A follow-up inspection will be conducted to ensure that sink is fully installed with approved surfaces. Failure to install sink within established timeframe may lead to further legal action.
  • Facility was granted 6 months to install an air gap drain on sanitize basin of 3 compartment sink, or to install a designated food prep sink with an air gapped drain of at least 1 inch. A follow-up inspection will be conducted to ensure that air gap is provided. Failure to comply by established timeframe may lead to further legal action.
  • Ceiling lights in storage closet lack light shield or shatter-resistant bulbs.
