30 violations at 88 Cafe &Pub in Norristown; Mold-like growth on containers inside prep unit, Fly-like insects observed throughout facility, Plant growing out of junction of ceiling and exhaust hood at end of cooks line

The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services Office of Public Health (MCOPH) conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on 8/7/2020. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations the 88 Cafe &Pub was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 30 violations were found and include one or more violations determined to be food borne illness risk factors.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • Facility lacking a current MCOPH CFSM. Facility has 10 business days to submit reciprocity application or submit proof of registration in an approved food safety course.

  • Hand sink behind bar and in kitchen obstructed at time of inspection.

  • Lacking single service towels for hand sink in kitchen.

  • Hand washing sign lacking at hand sink in men’s restroom.

  • Raw chicken stored on top of beverages in walk-in cooler.

  • Cutting board with deep grooves and heavy discoloration across from cooks line.

  • Splash guard of ice machine unclean. Clean and sanitize according to owner’s manual.

  • Employee medication stored in cooler among for-sale beverages.

  • Facility lacking visible accurate thermometers in several cold units.

  • Common name label lacking on multiple secondary dry goods containers.

  • Side door propped open upon arrival. (allows access to vermin)

  • Rear door open at time of inspection.

  • Fly-like insects observed throughout facility. Facility has 10 business days to provide proof of next professional pest control treatment to MCOPH.

  • Rodent-like droppings observed next to chest freezer in kitchen. Facility has 10 business days to provide proof of next professional pest control treatment to MCOPH. Send to jcoyle@montcopa.org

  • Bag of rice in open original bag stored on chair directly next to hand sink in kitchen. Owner poured rice into food-grade container with lid and placed on shelf.

  • Multiple food items stored in open metal cans in prep unit.

  • Open employee beverages stored in cooler among for-sale beverages.

  • Plant growing out of junction of ceiling and exhaust hood at end of cooks line.

  • Facility lacking sanitizing agent at start of inspection.

  • Dust build-up on fan guards and ceiling of walk-in cooler.

  • Shelf under flat top grill unclean.

  • Dust build-up on fan guards in 3-door cooler behind bar.

  • Front of ice machine unclean.

  • Mold-like growth on containers inside prep unit.

  • 2 times repeat violation: Floor under cooks line equipment unclean.

  • Mop not stored hanging or inverted to dry.

  • 2 times repeat violation: Filters above cooks line equipment unclean.
