The Bucks County Department of Health conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on 2/26/2020. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations A&S Bagel was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 7 violations were found.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • Upon BCDH inspector arrival, front handwash sink contained soiled utensils (knife, spoon) and rear handwash sink contained a plastic bottle and is collecting drainage from walk-in cooler.
    A handwashing facility must be maintained so that it is accessible at all times for employee use. Additionally, a handwashing facility may not be used for purposes other than handwashing.
    Re-route drainage to alternate location.  Corrected On-Site.  New Violation.  
  • Facility stores raw eggs in cardboard trays within the front refrigerated display case, surrounded by ready-to-eat (RTE) foods.
    A broken egg (yolk, white w/no shell) was found laying next to a tray of cooked ham lunchmeat. Tray included unknown liquid. Contents of tray were discarded during inspection.
    Raw eggs must be stored and handled in a manner to prevent contamination.
    Relocate.  New Violation. To be Corrected By: 02/26/2020  
  • 1. Scoop for ice (stored within ice machine) contains a mold-like accumulation. Black specs were observed on ice within.
    Empty ice and detail clean and sanitize scoop and internal surfaces of ice machine.
    Per CFSM, ice is used for indirect cooling only and not for any food contact use.
    2. Utensils (can opener, knives), designated as clean, were found to be unclean with food residue.
    Remove to 3-compartment sink to be washed and sanitized.  New Violation. To be Corrected By: 02/26/2020 
  • Single-use take-out containers were found in use as scooping utensils in bulk products.
    A cleanable, handled scooping utensil must be used. If stored within product to be dispensed, scoop must be stored with handle oriented upwards and above food.  Repeat Violation
  • 1. HVAC vents in prep area contain an accumulation of dust.
    2. Shelves and equipment in prep room contain dried food residue and grime.
    3. Fan covers in the walk-in cooler contain a build-up of dust.
    4. Floor of the walk-in cooler contains food residue and a mold-like accumulation.
    Affected areas must be detail cleaned and sanitized where applicable.  New Violation. To be Corrected By: 03/11/2020 
  • Cove base molding has pulled away from walls in several areas of the back prep room.
    Repair tomallow for a cleanable and non-absorbent surface.  Repeat Violation
