The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Food Safety and Laboratory Services conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on 4/6/2020. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations the Dollar General was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 5 violations were found.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • Rear door located in the store room area of the food facility has a 1/2″ gap and does not protect against the entry of insects, rodents, and other animals.
  • Potential rodent harborage areas on the exterior of the building perimeter due to garbage and lawn debris.
  • Potential rodent harborage areas inside the food facility observed in the store room area due to overstocking and failure to rotate product.
  • Food facility does not have a Health Awareness Reporting Procedure for food employees. Handout provided that may be adopted as facility policy.
  • Observed (2) dead mice in a trap in the storage area. Unable to inspect other areas of the store room due to overcrowding of old stock.
  • Paper towel dispenser empty at the handwash sink in the men’s restroom. Corrected on site.

This story, originally, wrongly stated the inspection was of a Family Dollar location. This was wholly wrong as the inspection was of the Dollar General in Canonsburg.
