Century House Restaurant blows inspection, Molded meats and cheeses observed in cooler, 21 violations says Health Department of Hatfield eatery

HATFIELD, PA 19440The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services Office of Public Health (MCOPH) conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on January 22, 2020. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations the Century House Restaurant in Hatfield was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 21 violations were found and include one or more violations determined to be food borne illness risk factors.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • Molded meats and cheeses observed in outdoor walk-in refrigerator. Facility voluntarily discarded all molded foods during inspection.

  • (4 times repeat violation) Live shellfish tags for clams and oysters not kept with the container until fully used. Failure to correct and maintain multiple repeat violations may lead to legal action.

  • Raw shell eggs stored directly above ready-to-eat foods in walk-in refrigerator. Facility relocated items during inspection.

  • Chlorine sanitizer concentration for dish machine in kitchen tested at 0ppm at time of inspection. Facility primed machine during inspection and machine observed with final rinse concentration within approved levels during inspection.

  • Facility lacking adequate date marking of prepared TCS food items to be stored in facility for longer than 24 hours. Adequate date marking of prepared TCS foods to be stored in facility for longer than 24 hours consists of a discard date not to exceed 7 days from date of preparation. EHS e-mailed facility PDA date marking guidelines during inspection.

  • Unlabeled chemical spray bottle observed at bar.

  • 2 mahi mahi filets packaged using a reduced-oxygen method and labelled “remove from packaging prior to thawing” observed thawed in refrigeration units without having been removed from packaging. Facility voluntarily discarded 2 mahi filets during inspection.

  • Containers of food stored on floor in walk-in refrigerator. Facility elevated items during inspection.

  • Tongs stored on oven handles on cook’s line.

  • (5 times repeat violation)Facility observed storing mop and mop bucket outside of back door of facility. Failure to correct and maintain multiple repeat violations may result in further legal action or citation. Citation possible.

  • Liquid accumulation observed on interior bottom of food prep refrigerator at cook’s line.

  • Cloth string(s) observed supporting faucet of waitstaff area hand washing sink. String is not easily cleanable. Repair.

  • Open original canned food product observed stored in 1 door reach-in refrigerator at kitchen. Upon opening, canned foods must be used in their entirety or remainder must be transferred to food-grade container.

  • Stagnant water and mold-like growth observed in unused chest freezer in basement. Clean freezer or remove from premises.

  • Slow drip leaks observed at drain line of bar three compartment sink.

  • Dumpster lids open at time of inspection.

  • Facility observed storing grease barrels on soil behind dumpster area. Relocate to a solid, non-absorbent surface.

  • (3 times repeat violation) Repaired section of ceiling above 1 door tall refrigerator not sealed/finished with a minimum of semi-gloss paint. Failure to correct and maintain multiple repeat violations may lead to legal action.

  • (3 times repeat violation) Vent and wall around vent leading to outside above 2 tall refrigerators by cook’s line observed with dust accumulation and dead insects. Failure to correct and maintain multiple repeat violations may lead to legal action.

  • Stagnant water observed on floor beneath equipment in basement.

  • Some fluorescent light bulbs in kitchen not shatter-resistant/lack shatter guard.
