Complaint inspection at Dekalb Supermarket in Norristown finds 18 violations; Multiple bottles of liquid baby formula observed on shelf with expired sell-by dates, Multiple packages of unsliced deli lunch meat lacking date markings

The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services Office of Public Health (MCOPH) conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on 8/20/2020. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations the DeKalb Supermarket was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 18 violations were found and include one or more violations determined to be food borne illness risk factors.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • Facility lacking a current MCOPH Certified Food Sanitation Manager certificate. Facility has 5 business days to submit MCOPH reciprocity application. Application left at time of inspection.

  • Lacking single service towels for hand sink outside of employee restrooms.

  • Multiple bottles of liquid baby formula observed on shelf with expired sell-by dates. Facility voluntarily removed all items.

  • Improper date marking for shellstock tags after product has been consumed/sold.

  • Multiple packages of unsliced deli lunch meat lacking date markings indicating date opened.

  • Can of Hot Shot insecticide observed behind deli counter.

  • Insect control device mounted directly above hand sink behind deli counter.

  • Boxes of food stored on floor in walk-in freezer in butcher area.

  • Torn door gasket observed on walk-in freezer.

  • Facility using plastic trash bag-like liners under cartons of eggs in retail cooler. Material is not easily-cleanable.

  • Fan guards in multiple walk-in coolers are unclean. Bottom vents in bacon retail cooler unclean.

  • Facility using rigid foam material to divert flow of water at air gap under prep sink in butcher area.

  • Covered waste receptacle lacking in two unisex employee restrooms.

  • 4 times repeat violation: Stained ceiling tiles in retail area.

  • Ceiling tiles missing in retail area.

  • Mop not stored hanging or inverted to dry.

  • Cardboard lining floor behind seafood counter.

  • Heavy dust build-up on ceiling vent in employee restroom.
