Dead mouse-like rodent, Mice-like droppings observed; Springfield School’s Enfield Elementary Kitchen fumbles Health Department inspection in Oreland

The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services Office of Public Health (MCOPH) conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on 2/25/2020. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations the School District of Springfield Township-Enfield Elementary School Campus Kitchen was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 5 violations were found and include one or more violations determined to be food borne illness risk factors.

Presence of rodent droppings isn’t new to Enfield Elementary:

  • October 21, 2016- Mice like droppings located in dish machine area where chemicals are located and stored.
  • February 8, 2017- Rodent like droppings located under front counter buffet area. 
  • February 21, 2019- Mice like droppings on the floor adjacent to kitchen reach-down freezer with bread storage. 
  • September 23, 2019- Mice like droppings on the floor below shelves in dry storage room

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • Milk cartons stored on top milk crates of grab-and-go refrigerator observed with internal temperature above 41F. Manager will dispose unsold milk after last lunch service (within 4hr frame). Other milk cartons in the lower and back part of refrigerator observed with proper internal temperature.
  • Grab-and-go milk refrigerator observed with ambient temperature above 41F. Manager closed refrigerator’s los for the remaining of the inspection, unit observed at 38F before end of inspection.
  • Mice-like droppings observed under hand sink in front service area, and at cook’s line. Mice-like droppings were also found on floors in dining area near back exit door, and behind large supplies closet. Employee cleaned and sanitized areas. Have licensed pest control service. Send pest control report to MCOPH within 10 business days, email provided. Pest control report must state treatment and target pest.
  • Dead mouse-like rodent observed on a glue trap in dish machine room. Manager removed trap at time of inspection. Clean and sanitize area.
  • Gap observed behind water fountain in dining room (near back exit door).
