“Deer hoof charm stored on bagel toaster,” 20 violations for Tellez-Marella Diner inspection in Hatfield

The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services Office of Public Health (MCOPH) conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on February 3, 2020. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations the Tellez-Marella Diner was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 20 violations were found and include one or more violations determined to be food borne illness risk factors.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • CFSM certificate not posted in public view. Post publicly or apply for duplicate.

  • Food handler observed handling ready to eat hard-boiled eggs with bare hands. Facility voluntarily discarded hard-boiled eggs during inspection. EHS instructed facility on proper hand washing and glove use during inspection.

  • (4 times repeat violation)Many food containers found uncovered in cook’s line prep refrigerator and inside of walk-in refrigerator. Failure to correct multiple repeat violations may result in further legal action or citation.

  • (2 times repeat violation) Raw shell eggs found stored above cheese in prep refrigerator. Failure to correct and maintain multiple repeat violations may lead to legal action.

  • Slicer blade and slicer blade housing unclean. Clean and sanitize immediately.

  • Food-like accumulation observed on can opener blade.

  • (4 times repeat violation) Prepared or opened TCS ready to eat foods held in facility longer than 24 hours missing required discard date marking not to exceed 7 days from and including the prep/open date. Facility was emailed date marking regulations during inspection. Failure to correct multiple repeat violations may result in further legal action or citation.

  • Facility menu includes consumer advisory statement, however statement is not linked to specific menu items via the use of an asterisk (*) or other effective means.

  • Spray bottles of chemicals found without labeling by 3 compartment sink, at cook’s line, and in bathrooms.

  • (2 times repeat violation) Employee personal medication bottle found on cook’s line next to toaster. Failure to correct and maintain multiple repeat violations may lead to legal action.

  • Containers of food stored on floor in walk-in refrigerator. Elevate all foods to a minimum of 6 inches from floor.

  • Deer hoof charm stored on bagel toaster. Facility relocated item during inspection.

  • Houseplants stored on drain board of food prep sink. Facility may not water houseplants at food prep sink. Facility must clean and sanitize sink basin and drain board prior to next use.

  • Baking sheet stored on floor to the left of cook’s line equipment.

  • (4 times repeat violation) Extensive re-use of single service food packaging containers (sour cream, mayonnaise, etc.) to store facility prepared foods. Facility also observed using these single-service plastic containers to use for the hot holding of foods in countertop steam table and at griddle. Failure to correct multiple repeat violations may result in further legal action or citation.

  • Prep sink found no longer adequately sealed to wall or to adjacent 3 compartment sink and caulk between prep sink and 3 compartment sink observed with food debris and mold-like residue build-up.

  • Facility observed lining fryer splash guard with foil.

  • Open original metal can of corned beef hash observed in prep refrigerator. Upon opening, canned food products must be used in their entirety or the remainder must be transferred to a food-grade container.

  • Grease-like accumulation observed on sides of equipment at cook’s line.

  • Food debris and grease-like accumulation observed on floor beneath grill/griddle.
