Eli’s Bakery Cafe in Norristown fails 6th straight inspection, “Employee using top of trash can to store container of food,” 11 violations

The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services Office of Public Health (MCOPH) conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on December 20, 2019. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations the Eli’s Bakery Cafe was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 11 violations were found.

Eli’s Bakery and Cafe last passed an inspection on November 16, 2016 this latest inspection making the sixth straight it’s failed to pass:

  • June 7, 2017- 9 violations
  • December 11, 2017- 10 violations
  • July 3, 2018- 10 violations
  • November 7, 2018- 8
  • May 20, 2019- 7 violations

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • Hand wash sink by register lacking paper towels

  • Hand wash sink near 3 bay sink blocked(must be accessible at all times)

  • Spray bottles lacking common name

  • Employee using top of trash can to store container of food

  • Employee prepping food items in 3 bay ware wash sink alongside soiled equipment (inspector explained proper usage of all sinks)

  • Wet wiping cloths not stored in a sanitizing solution

  • Tongs stored on oven handle

  • Frost build-up Blue Bunny freezer

  • Improper air gap at food prep sink

  • Damaged ceiling tile in public restroom

  • Filters above cook line equipment unclean
