Fort Pitt Tavern in Oakdale bumbles inspection; 10 violations, Bar manager observed handling of ready-to-eat hot dog buns with bare hands, Facility is not enforcing mask or facial coverage guidelines for employees or patrons

The Allegheny County Health Department’s Food Safety Program conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on 8/8/2020. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations the Fort Pitt Tavern was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 10 violations were found.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • Beverage merchandiser in-use for holding temperature controlled for safety foods. Resealable plastic gallon bag of hot dogs found in the unit.
  • No date marking of products observed during inspection.
  • No probe thermometer observed during inspection.
  • Bar manager observed handling of ready-to-eat hot dog buns with bare hands. Informed the manager that food that does not require cooking must be handled with gloves, utensils, napkins, or something that prevents contact with the food item.
  • Facility lacks test strips for quaternary-based sanitizers in-use at the bar. Only chlorine test strips available during inspection.
  • Hand sink in the kitchen next to the three-bowl sink does not function. Use the middle compartment for hand washing.
  • Operator preparing hot dogs did not know that ready-to-eat foods could not be handled with bare hands.
  • Ice scoop stored in the ice machine on the ice.
  • Walk-in cooler door panels along the side are peeling from the door, the panels on the floor are lifting, and separation present between the inside panels.
  • Facility lacks a covered refuse receptacle in the women’s restroom.
  • Facility is not enforcing mask or facial coverage guidelines for employees or patrons. Numerous guests observed in the facility and entering the facility without a facial covering. Facial covering only enforced from around the middle of the inspection.
  • Facility is not serving food in order to serve alcoholic beverages. Hot dogs were only served towards the middle of the inspection. At the start of the inspection, numerous guests observed consuming alcohol without food and purchasing additional drinks without food. Guests do have the option to order food from Gianni’s, such as pizza, wings, hoagies, etc. Facility is located down the driveway from the Fort Pitt Inn.
