Health Dept hits East Pikeland Wendy’s Restaurant for 9 violations, “Food handlers not washing hands in between separate tasks”

The Chester County Health Department conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on 3/6/2020. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations the Wendy’s Restaurant in East Pikeland Township was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 9 violations were found.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • Food handlers not washing hands in between separate tasks. EHS stressed the importance of proper hand washing and food handling.
  • During operation food in reach in cooler tempted between 54-61 degrees F. Salads in bottom of unit tempted at 61 degrees F. Facility voluntarily discarded all food from unit. Facility set up an ice bath for all new containers of food tempted at 41 degrees F or below. ENSURE proper cold hold of all required foods of 41 Degrees F or below at all times. Facility may not use unit until repaired, and holding temperature of 41 degrees F or below.*
  • Hamburger residue on prep counter and single use glove box at hamburger cooking area. Clean and sanitize.
  • Condiment and salad reach in cooler not properly working at time of inspection. Unit tempted at 60 degrees F. Unit emptied all food voluntarily discarded, do not use unit until repaired, at proper holding temperature of 41 degrees F or below.
  • The following need further cleaning and sanitizing: * Wall behind sinks and cooking equipment. * Sides of cooking equipment and equipment wheel castors and tubes on back of cooking equipment. * Upper splash guard of self serve soda dispenser in dining room. * Shelf area under hot water heater needs to be clean and organized. * shelf under red containers of food at front service counter. * Interior of cabinets (2)at self serve soda station in dining room
  • Deep clean the following: * Floor under cooking equipment and throughout all storage areas including small rooms in back of facility.
  • The Person in Charge did not demonstrate adequate knowledge of the PA Food Code as evidenced by incorrect responses to food safety questions.
  • Adequate Soap was not available at the hand wash sink in the drive thru hand wash sink.
  • Light out above cooks line. replace.

* The temperature danger zone is food temperatures between 41 and 135 degrees Fahrenheit and the most rapid bacteria growth occurs between 70 and 125 degrees Fahrenheit. The longer food sits in this temperature range, the greater the risk that bacteria will begin to grow on food.
