The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services Office of Public Health (MCOPH) conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on 6/23/2020. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations the Blue Moon Deli & Grocery in Pottstown was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 12 violations were found and include one or more violations determined to be food borne illness risk factors.

According to reporting by The Philadelphia Inquirer Blue Moon Deli last passed an inspection on June 27, 2017:

  • May 11, 2017- 13 violations with 5 food borne illness risk factor violations.
  • Jun 27, 2017- passed inspection following a complaint with one lower level “Lack of Good Retail Practices” violation, “Facility must get pest control immediately for drain fly type insects in basement.”
  • Nov 6, 2017- 18 violations with 7 food borne illness risk factor violations.
  • Nov 20, 2017- 3 violations with 1 food borne illness risk factor violation.
  • Sep 19, 2018- 13 violations with 6 food borne illness risk factor violations.
  • Nov 27, 2018- 6 violations with 3 food borne illness risk factor violations.
  • Sep 5, 2019- 6 violations with 2 food borne illness risk factor violations.
  • Dec 13, 2019- 11 violations with 3 food borne illness risk factor violations.
  • Jan 16, 2020- Complaint inspection finds 15 violations with 5 food borne illness risk factor violations.
  • Feb 14, 2020- 13 violations with 6 food borne illness risk factor violations.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • Lacking single service towels for back hand sink. Lacking soap at front hand sink.

  • Hand sink next to 3 bay sink blocked at time of inspection.

  • Several refrigeration units not cold holding properly. Walk-in cooler at 54 F (milk at 53 F/rice at 54F/prepped foods 60F). Deli display cooler at 60F (sausage at 59F/eggs at 62 F/cheese at 60 F) Bain marie at 44 F (Watermelon at 44 F). All foods denatured and voluntarily discarded. Must maintain 41 F or below at all times. Facility cannot use cold unit without prior Health Department approval.

  • Fly-like insects observed throughout facility. Front door propped open. Keep door shut at all times or install screen.

  • Chest freezer lid in back kitchen in poor repair. Replace/repair.

  • Observed interior and exterior of bain-marie unclean with food like debris. Observed walk-in floors and shelving unclean with food like debris. Clean and sanitize.

  • 2 times repeat violation- Restroom unclean. Clean/sanitize.

  • Observed garbage overflowing in back area. Must get garbage picked up as soon as possible.

  • Coving in restroom in need of repair. Repair so that surfaces are smooth, easily cleanable, and non-porous.

  • Dry storage rooms with debris. Clean/sanitize

  • Observed utility room with unnecessary items and litter. Must clean out room within 5 days.

  • Floors, walls, and ceiling throughout facility in disrepair. Must submit schedule for all repairs within 5 days.
