The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Food Safety and Laboratory Services conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on 1/29/21. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations Casa Toro Mexican Grill was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 11 violations were found.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • The Person in Charge does not have adequate knowledge of food safety in this food facility as evidenced by this non-compliant inspection.
  • Observed cut vegetable foods stored in a broken/chipped plastic food container, subject to potential contamination. Corrected and discussed with PIC.
  • Observed chips and salsa plates in the bar area stored open with no covering. Corrected.
  • Various refrigerated foods throughout all refrigerators and freezers in the kitchen area stored open with no covering. Corrected.
  •  Walk-in cooler shelving equipment with an accumulation of dust, dirt, food residue, debris on non-food contact surfaces; in need of cleaning.
  • Old food residue, dishes and utensils observed in the handwash sink, indicating uses other than handwashing. Discussed with PIC.
  • Floor / wall coving in the kitchen cook line handwash sink area cracked / roughened / and is not a smooth, easily cleanable surface. REPEAT VIOLATION.
  • Wall behind the fry cutter in the cook line area is cracked / roughened / and is not a smooth, easily cleanable surface.
  • Interior/exterior surface of the cook line bain marie equipment is cracked and/or repaired with materials unapproved for food equipment; in need of proper repair.
  • Loose/broken/cracked rubber door gaskets observed on the cook line bain marie cooling unit; in need of proper repair.
  • Food facility inspection indicates evidence of rodents/insect activity in the far back storage area, but facility does have a pest control program.
  • Grease filters above the cook line area of the food facility is extremely dirty, dusty, and in need of cleaning.
  • Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration of the chlorine based mechanical ware-washing machine or the QUAT ammonia based sanitizer at the 3-bay ware-washing sink.
  • Observed hot water pressure nozzle turned off at the cook line handwashing sink. Corrected and discussed with PIC.
