Inspection Derry Family Supermarket; Live cat, “fecal evidence,” 15 violations following complaint

The City of Harrisburg conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on 6/25/2020 following a complaint. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations the Derry Family Market was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 15 violations were found.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • The Person in Charge did not demonstrate adequate knowledge of the PA Food Code as evidenced by incorrect responses to food safety questions.
  • Food establishment dating information on frozen beef food label has been concealed or altered
  • Food Facility Person in Charge not able to provide documentation that meat foods are from an approved source.
  • Packaged raw meat & poultry used or offered by the food facility is not labeled with safe handling instructions.
  • Perimeter walls / roof of the food facility does not protect from weather and entry of insects, rodents, and other animals.
  • Old unused equipment stored in * area, should be removed from food facility.
  • Wall  area, has a hole, or is broken and in need of repair.
  • Roof is leaking water and is in need of repair.
  • Potential rodent harborage areas inside the food facility observed in the basment area due to excess trash, inventory, standing water, holes in walls.
  • Floor / wall / ceiling in the  is cracked / roughened / and is not a smooth, easily cleanable surface.
  • Walls  are not sealed to provide a smooth, non-absorbent, easily cleanable surface.
  • Delivery door located in the parking area of the food facility has a gap and does not protect against the entry of insects, rodents, and other animals.
  • Food Facility has packaged food which is not labeled as required.
  • Food in the basement cooler area stored open with no covering.
  • Non-food contact surfaces not cleaned at a frequency to preclude accumulation of dirt and soil.
  • Studs / joists / rafters in the * area are exposed and subject to moisture
  • Live cat observed on the premise of the food facility in the basement area.
  • Observed fecal evidence, indicating the presence of a live animal on the premise of the food facility.
