The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Food Safety and Laboratory Services conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on 6/25/2020. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations Valley Family Restaurant was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 9 violations were found.

The restaurant’s “Google My Business” account suggests the restaurant is permanently closed. The Pennsylvania Chronicle believes this to be inaccurate as the Department of Agriculture does not inspect closed restaurants.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • The Person in Charge did not demonstrate adequate knowledge of the PA Food Code as evident by the violations observed in this inspection report.
  • Raw egg storage flat stored directly on top of bacon located inside 2-door cooling unit. *Corrected*
  • Observed large box of raw shelled eggs stored directly above containers of ready to eat food located inside 2-door cooling unit. *Corrected*
  • Observed a large bag of onions stored directly on ground located inside small brick storage unit of facility (small unit behind the restaurant). *Corrected*
  • In-use spray container of pesticide stored directly above meat slicer of rear food preparation table. *Corrected*
  • Beef and eggs are served raw or undercooked to the customer’s request; however, a written consumer advisory (on the menu, table tent, or placard) is not provided to the consumer.
  • Facility chlorine test strips appear to be disintegrated (from being wet at one time or exposed to liquid) and not in functional condition during time of inspection.
  • Observed excessive live fly activity located in area of dish wash unit and rear food preparation areas (area near meat slicer).
  • Observed rodent-like droppings located in the following areas of main food preparation: floors/corners behind grill area freezer, floors/corners behind both corner 2-door cooling units, and on floors behind middle 2-door cooling unit.
  • Observed in-use containers of cleaner/sanitizers stored directly next to cleaned/sanitized utensils located on bottom shelving unit located on clean side of dish wash unit. *Corrected*
  • Facility is lacking splash plate/guard between drain board of “sanitize” end of 3-bay sink and adjacent hand wash sink.
