Inspector hits Panera Bread in Johnstown after repeated visits, “This is the worst fly infestation in the past 6 months. A solution for the fly problem must be found.”

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Food Safety and Laboratory Services conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on 2/28/2020. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations the Panera Bread in the Richland Town CenterĀ  was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 1 violations were found.

The inspector added this comment to the report:

This is a follow up inspection of a limited service retail food facility due to a fruit or drain fly infestation on the inspection of 1-29-20. Since that time fruit fly infestation has become much worse with increased numbers of flies and more areas of the store where the flies are present. Facility will be listed out of compliance and a warning letter will be issued to this facility from the Pa Dept of Agriculture Region 5 Office for uncontrolled pests in a food prep area. Agent will return with in 2 weeks for a follow up inspection. Failure to comply on the inspection could result in a $150.00 of $300.00 re-inspection fee.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • Noted 10 drain flies in the bakery area on the walls, noted 50 drain flies in the sandwich prep area on the walls and ceiling, noted 10 drain flies on the wall in the soft drink area, noted 25 drain flies on the floor under the hot soup heating unit. UV light fly traps have been installed but they are ineffective with no flies in the trap. This is the worst fly infestation in the past 6 months. A solution for the fly problem must be found.
