Montgomery Pizza in North Wales flubs 11th straight Health Department inspection with 17 violations, county threatens legal action for repeat violations

The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services Office of Public Health (MCOPH) conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on 2/10/2020. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations Montgomery Pizza in North Wales was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 17 violations were found and include one or more violations determined to be food borne illness risk factors.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • Facility storing raw food items above ready to eat food items at food prep cooler on cooks line.

  • Uncovered food items observed in storage throughout facility refrigeration / freezer units.

  • (2 times repeat violation) food like accumulation observed on slicer blades and housing. Clean and sanitized during time of inspection.

  • Food accumulation observed on cutting blade a shelf mounted can opener in back prep area.

  • (5 times repeat violation) facility lacking adequate date markings on prepared/opened TCS food items stored in a facility under refrigeration for longer than 24hrs. Adequate date markings consist of a discard date not to exceed 7 days from the date or preparation/opening. Facility observed in compliance regarding some TCS items and lacking on other items. Facility instructed that a follow up will take place on or after 2/18/2020 to confirm facility is labeling all TCS items properly. Failure to correct and maintain multiple repeat violations may lead to future and immediate legal actions.

  • Employee medicine observed on wire rack above pizza prep fridge. Facility relocated during time of inspection.

  • Employee clothing stored hanging from shelving for clean equipment outside of walk in cooler.

  • Facility storing bin of tools mixed with clean food prep / service equipment outside of walk in cooler.

  • Facility observed storing food in grocery-style bags in 1 door reach in freezer. Facility instructed to relocate – voluntarily discarded one piece of frozen/raw sausage.

  • (3 times repeat violation) Facility improperly storing tongs at stove – facility storing food contact parts on stove burner/stove top. Facility instructed to clean and sanitize and store in an approved manner – EHS discussed approved storage locations.

  • Facility using single use plastic ramekins for scoops in dry storage bins (pepper/etc).

  • Facility using folded cardboard to secure equipment on food prep cooler cutting boards and interior of pizza prep cooler top storage bins. Facility instructed that all items used to ensure equipment is in good working order should be smooth, non-porous, easily cleaned and durable. Facility voluntarily discarded items.

  • Deep groves and staining observed on multiple cutting boards in facility.

  • (2 times repeat violation) facility lacking chlorine sanitizer test strips while using chlorine as a sanitizer. Facility only in possession of Quaternary sanitizing test strips.

  • Accumulation / spillage observed on shelving throughout facility – dry storage/walk in cooler/etc.

  • Exterior of three door freezer adjacent to mixer with food spillage / accumulation.

  • Dust accumulation observed on fan guard and ceiling of walk in cooler.
