Osaka Japanese Restaurant in Lansdale fumbles 2nd inspection this month; In-use utensils observed stored in stagnant water, 11 violations

The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services Office of Public Health (MCOPH) conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on 2/19/2020. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations the Osaka Japanese Restaurant was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 11 violations were found and include one or more violations determined to be food borne illness risk factors.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • Employees in kitchen area lacking knowledge of food safety and regulation. Facility must train employees properly on hand washing, food temperatures, sanitation, proper hygiene and glove use. Food handler observed not washing hands before putting gloves on and handling ready-to-eat foods without washing hands and changing gloves. EHS discussed with owner.

  • Raw foods stored over ready-to-eat foods in walk-in cooler. Facility moved.

  • 2 times repeat violation. Date marking lacking on food items in refrigeration. All foods prepped on site and held longer than 24 hours must be date marked and discarded after 7 days.

  • 2 times repeat violation. Foods in cooler units uncovered. Cover to prevent contamination.

  • Food handlers lacking proper hair restraints. Facility provided.

  • In-use utensils observed stored in stagnant water. Facility removed, wash and sanitize before next use. Store utensils on sanitary surface. If storing in water, water must be running or at 135F or above.

  • Scoops for dry goods lacking handles. Facility removed and provided scoops with handles.

  • Exteriors of equipment unclean with food-like and grease-like debris. Clean.

  • Interior of reach-in coolers unclean. Clean and sanitize.

  • Some floor tiles in kitchen in need of repair or replacement.

  • Hood filters unclean with grease-like buildup. Clean. EHS to follow-up in 24 hours.
