Philadelphia’s Office of Food Protection conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on 4/17/2020. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations the Family Spot Jamaican Restaurant was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 29 violations were found.

In the report the inspector said:

Due to imminent health hazards observed during this inspection, the establishment has been issued a Cease Operations Order and must discontinue food operations immediately. The establishment cannot operate for a minimum of 48 hours. The establishment cannot operate until the required fee is paid and the establishment is approved by the Department to resume operations. Please contact 215-685-7495 for a re-inspection once the violations have been corrected and the fee has been paid.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • Items are not stored at least 6 inches above the floor – containers of food, containers of grease, and the bottom shelf of the shelving unit.  New Violation.
  • Food employee observed not wearing effective hair restraints – beard restraint.  New Violation.
  • Food utensils were stored in soiled, stagnant, room temperature water in the food prep area.  New Violation.
  • Multi-use utensils are not stored to prevent contamination while not in use – mouse feces observed on utensils.  New Violation.
  • 1. Non-NSF/ANSI approved equipment observed – toaster oven, drying rack, containers used for food storage, and blender.
    2. Garbage grinder installed on the hand wash sink is defective.
    3. Damaged door gaskets observed on the walk-in cooler and reach in refrigerator.
    4. Defective refrigeration is used for dry storage in the front prep area.
    5. Utility rack is broken and not in good repair.  New Violation.
  • Exhaust hood is not properly sealed – gaps observed along the top and side of hood.  New Violation.
  • Facility lacks an adequate amount of storage shelving to allow for storage of soiled and / or clean items before and after cleaning at the ware wash sink – dirty dishes observed piled on the floor in the food prep/ware wash area.  New Violation.
  • Ware wash sink basins and fixtures are unclean – mold observed along caulk.  New Violation.
  • 1. Interior surfaces of refrigeration and freezer equipment are unclean – debris observed inside of refrigeration units, and heavy ice accumulation on the floors and shelving of the walk-in cooler.
    2. Mouse feces observed on the following non-food contact surfaces in the food prep area – rolls of aluminum foil, box of gloves, prep table shelf, steam table shelf, and unused equipment (scale, tray, fryer, and single burner stove).
    3. Exterior surfaces of food storage containers, and cooking equipment are unclean.  New Violation.
  • Exhaust hood surfaces, filters, and fire suppression pipes are greasy and unclean.  New Violation.
  • Hand wash sinks in the toilet facility does not have running water.  New Violation.
  • Hot water at least 100 degrees F was not available at the hand wash sinks; water temperature peaked at 64 degrees F in the food prep area, no running water in toilet facility.  New Violation.
  • Stagnant wastewater (approximately 2 inches) observed inside of the hand wash sink.  New Violation.
  • 1. Walls and flooring throughout the facility have an accumulation of food splatter and other debris.
    2. Mouse feces observed along the floor perimeters, and under shelving and equipment throughout the facility.
    3. Dirt and debris observed inside of the floor sink.
    4. Containers of old grease are stored in the rear storage area.
    5. Soiled rags and other items observed cluttered on the floor in the rear area.  New Violation.
  • 1. Flooring in the food prep/ware wash area is cracked and damaged – hole observed under ware wash sink.
    2. Damaged wall surface by the walk-in freezer door.
    3. Unsealed gaps observed around the light fixtures in the rear hallway/storage areas.  New Violation.
  • Idle maintenance tools (brooms, mops, and dustpans) are not properly stored, elevated on to a utility rack.  New Violation.
  • Defective lights observed in walk-in freezer, in the hallway where the walk-in freezer is located, and under the exhaust hood.  New Violation.
  • Take out establishment does not have a waste and/or recycling receptacle within 10 feet of the building.  New Violation.
