Pittsburgh’s Donatelli’s Food Center fouls inspection; Several dead roaches observed, Mouse droppings observed throughout the store

The Allegheny County Health Department’s Food Safety Program conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on 7/30/2020 following a complaint. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations Donatelli’s Italian Food Center was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 5 violations were found.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • No cooling charts for prepared foods.
  • Many non-food contact surfaces need to be cleaned:
    -Floor of walk in
    -shelves of walk in
    -storage shelves in the grocery area
    -storage shelves in the kitchen area (there is a large amount on these shelves, organize so that it
    is easier to clean)
    -employee sidekick plates of deli coolers.
  • -Several dead roaches observed in the basement and under the dry pasta shelf in the customer area.
    -Mouse droppings observed throughout the store:
    *under shelving and the display coolers
    *under shelving in the kitchen
    *in the basement
    *on the bottom shelves where the soda is stored
    -There is too much miscellaneous stuff in the basement. This must be removed or organized.
    This is providing a harborage to rodents. The pest problem cannot be remedied without addressing this problem.
    -Large amount of miscellaneous items in the room by back door. Remove
  • No Certified Food Protection Manager.
  • Floors throughout the facility have damaged tiles exposing the sub-floor and have accumulated grease and food debris on them.
