Pizza Box in Ambler slapped with 19 violations, Waste water pipe draining into sanitize basin of 3 compartment sink”

The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services Office of Public Health (MCOPH) conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on December 18, 2019. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations The Pizza Box in Ambler was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 19 violations were found.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • Food license posted in facility is expired. Facility stated they submitted payment through the mail on Monday 12/16/19. Once new license is received post current one in public view.
  • Employee beverages found stored on prep surfaces and inside of refrigeration units. COS (corrected on-site), Repeat 
  • Soiled pizza cutter stored in pizza station hand wash sink. COS
  • Raw chicken stored on top of cooked chicken in walk-in refrigerator. COS,Repeat
  • Prepared and opened TCS ready to eat foods held in facility under refrigeration longer than 24 hours missing required discard date marking not to exceed 7 days from the prep/open date (open loafs of deli meats). Facility was emailed date marking regulations during inspection. Repeat
  • Food containers stored on floor of walk-in refrigerator.
  • Facility found to be using area of neighboring business to store chest freezers, paper products, beverage cases, and pizza boxes. A 24 hour follow-up inspection will be conducted to ensure all items are removed from neighboring business’ areas. It will be discussed with supervisor possible citation due to non-compliance. – Repeat (Correct By: Dec 19, 2019)
  • Food handler lacking hair restraint. COS,Repeat
  • Wet wiping cloth at pizza counter not stored in sanitizer between uses. Repeat
  • Tongs stored hanging on oven handles.
  • Scoops lacking handles stored inside of bulk dry food ingredients in back prep area.
  • Facility is re-using ketchup bottles to store cheese sauce on cook’s line.
  • Bottom of cook’s line prep refrigerator lined with absorbent linen.
  • Hand wash sinks at pizza station, kitchen prep area, and in restroom need to be re-sealed to the wall.
  • Mop sink and 3 compartment sink need to be sealed to the wall.
  • Drain pipe under food prep sink observed hanging below flood level rim of air gap drain. Facility must provide an indirect drain with proper air gap for food prep sink. A follow-up inspection will be conducted on or after 1/2/20 to verify compliance. – (Correct By: Jan 2, 2020)
  • Facility was granted 6 months from change of ownership to install a mop sink(12/16/19). Mop sink basin was installed but no faucet was installed at sink. A follow-up inspection will be conducted on or after 1/2/20 to verify compliance. Failure to comply may result in further legal action. – Repeat (Correct By: Jan 2, 2020)
  • Waste water pipe from water heater observed draining into sanitize basin of 3 compartment sink. Pipe must be re-routed into mop sink as to not contaminate clean wares. A follow-up inspection will be conducted on or after 1/2/20 to verify compliance. – (Correct By: Jan 2, 2020)
