The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Food Safety and Laboratory Services conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on 8/10/2020. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations the Save A Lot was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 7 violations were found.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • Severely dented, swollen, distressed canned items observed on sales floor and intended for use or sale in the food facility. Removed and discarded.
  • Meat dept handwashing sink separated from wall.
  • Meat department handwashing sink drain line disconnected. At this time sink is not usable. Employees are using hand sink in produce area.
  • Handwashing sink in meat department cut room lack splash guards. Hand sink is positioned next to ware washing sink.
  • Raw meat build-up present on food-contact surface of meat grinder. At time of inspection, grinder head could not be removed to properly clean and sanitize. Store general manager and meat department employees advised that grinder is not to be used until head removed and all parts are cleaned and sanitized.
  • The Person in Charge does not have adequate knowledge of food safety in this food facility as evidenced by this non-compliant inspection.
  • Facility does not have written procedures for employees to follow when responding to an event involving vomitus or fecal matter discharge onto surfaces within the facility. Handout provided.
  • Food facility does not employ a certified food employee as required.
