“Visible evidence of rodent contaminated foods,” New Castle Sheetz fails inspection, “knawed/eaten hot dogs” observed

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Food Safety and Laboratory Services conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on December 16, 2019. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations the Sheetz on 422 in New Castle was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 3 violations were found.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • Potential rodent harborage areas inside the food facility observed in the Walk In Cooler, Back electrical room area by back door and in cabinets under soda fountains/Icee machine area due to aproximately 15 REP’s* observed
  • Floor under/beside soda syrup boxes has syrup residuals
  • Counter top under “bank of frozen drink mixing machines has accumulation of syrup spillage.
  • Observed c in the walk in cooler area. Inspector observed 1 package of Hot Dogs on bottom shelf with gnawed thru packaging accompanied by knawed/eaten hot dogs. Inspector also observed 5 REP’s on shelf/floor area by hot dogs. Product shown to manager and removed from sale.
