The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture¬† conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on 2/14/2020. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations the Shop and Save was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 11 violations were found.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • The Person in Charge does not have adequate knowledge of food safety in this food facility as evidenced by this non-compliant inspection.
  • Prepackaged deli items (salads, pizzas, antipasto, coleslaw) are not labeled properly with the ingredient statement, net weight and distributed by statement.
  • Pepperoni rolls made in-house list provolone cheese as an ingredient, but do not contain cheese. Update label.
  • Deli walk-in cooler gasket is torn and not in good repair.
  • Meat room paper towel dispenser does not consistently dispense towels. Must have towels readily available. REPEAT VIOLATION (2-21-19)
  • Food employee observed in deli area wearing multiple bracelets/rings.
  • Deli/bakery walk-in freezer floor has excessive black build up. Back splash surrounding deli stove top has excess grease. Interior of proofer is unclean. Filters in deli hood system have excessive dust build up. Shelving in dairy section of walk-in cooler have excess dried milk build up.
  • Black containers observed in the produce hand wash sink indicating uses other than hand washing. CORRECTED ON SITE REPEAT VIOLATION (2/12/18, 2/21/19)
  • Meat room mop sink observed dripping water.
  • Trash receptacle used inside the food facility in deli area has black build up on exterior.
  • In deli area, floor and walls around fryers and breading station have grease/food debris build up. Floor drain in meat room has debris build up.
  • Delallo olive bar products at 52F -55F (cheese-stuffed olives, antipasti & olives). Discard items and repair unit.*
  • Pizza cheese and pepperoni left out at room temperature a prolonged time to prep pizzas. Cheese at 56F and pepperoni at 68F. Spoke with deli mgr to either keep products on ice or decrease amount of time at room temperature. Products placed back in walk-in cooler. Corrected.

* The temperature danger zone is food temperatures between 41 and 135 degrees Fahrenheit and the most rapid bacteria growth occurs between 70 and 125 degrees Fahrenheit. The longer food sits in this temperature range, the greater the risk that bacteria will begin to grow on food.
