10 violations for Far Corner’s Asian Market in State College; fish in open display case where subject to contamination from customers, chicken wings in open box laying in consumer aisle

The State College Borough conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on 5/15/2020. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations the Far Corner’s Asian Market was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 10 violations were found.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • Raw animal foods for sale must display a consumer advisory stating, ” Consuming raw or undercooked meats, poultry, seafood, shellfish or eggs may increase your risk of food borne illness.”
  • Various Fish in the produce display case open to the public stored with no covering. Chicken wings frozen stored in a box laying in the aisle open to the public with no covering or wrapping to protect from contamination. Food was disposed of while on site. Long eel like fish displayed without coverings.
  • Prepackaged whole chickens, beef bones, food is not labeled properly with the name of product, ingredient statement, net weight, distributed by statement and/or nutritional facts.
  • Observed consumer self-service display of chicken, fish, and beef bones without sneeze guards or other effective protection.
  • Potentially hazardous time temperature controlled food repackaged by the food facility, was not being date marked with a sell by, use by or discard by date.
  • Food dispensing utensil in beef bones observed stored in the food bag and not with handle above the top of the food and the container. Tongs for handling beef tripe were laying on top of the food with handle touching the food.
  • Observed fish stored in an open produce display case area, where is it subject to contamination from customers. Observed chicken wings stored in an open box laying in the consumer aisle. Observed fish stored in a box open laying in the consumer aisle. All was disposed of while on site.
  • Food Facility allowed for consumer self-service of raw *fish, and poultry*. Product was all disposed of while on site.
  • Beef Tripe food observed thawing at room temperature on the floor in the store room, which is not an approved thawing method. Chicken Wings, Long eel like Fish, Beef Bones all displayed semi frozen at room temperature thawing not under refrigeration, under running water and cooked immediately after, or microwaved and continued cooking.
  • Fish was held at 48 °F, in the produce display cooler area, rather than 41°F or below as required. Whole Chickens were held at 56 F rather than 41 F or below. Food was disposed of while on site. (see note below)

*The temperature danger zone is food temperatures between 41 and 135 degrees Fahrenheit and the most rapid bacteria growth occurs between 70 and 125 degrees Fahrenheit. The longer food sits in this temperature range, the greater the risk that bacteria will begin to grow on food. These violations are considered, "Food Borne Illness Risk Factor" violations.
