The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture conducted an unannounced retail food inspection.. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations the Colonial Grille in Irwin was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 12 violations were found.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • 2 food employees observed in prep area, not wearing proper hair restraints, such as beard covers.
  • Black filth observed on the interior of the soda fountain dispensers in the bar area. Cleaning will be made ASAP. Also observed an accumulation of black filth inside the juice nozzles in the dining area. In equipment such as beverage dispensing nozzles and distribution lines, beverage and syrup dispensing lines or tubes, surfaces of utensils and equipment contacting food that is not potentially hazardous shall be cleaned as follows: At a frequency specified by the manufacturer and at a frequency necessary to preclude mold/filth.
  • In 2 of 2 ice machines, black filth, pink slime observed on the interior of the ice machine bin, around water distribution tubing and freeze plate and underneath at discharge chute. DO NOT USE. Please empty ice machine COMPLETELY!! Wash, Rinse and Sanitize all parts and allow to air dry before refilling. This machine WAS NOT cleaned during the time of this inspection and bagged ice will be utilized until approval is obtained.
  • 2 of 2 paper towel dispensers empty at the hand wash sink in the fryer area and middle of the 2 cook’s line area
  • Food facility has a reminder statement on the menu for foods that are / or could be served raw or under cooked to the consumer; however, does not clearly disclose which foods the reminder statement applies to.
  • Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips or test kit to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration. Provide sanitizer test strips for the bar and dish washer.
  • Food facility has an original certificate, but the location is not conspicuous for public viewing.
  • The Person in Charge does not have adequate knowledge of food safety in this food facility as evidenced by this non-compliant inspection.
  • Cleaned and sanitized utensils located in prep area, are stored with food contact surfaces exposed to hand contact when retrieved by food employees.
  • Observed clean drinking glasses in front counter area, stored wet in a manner that does not allow for draining and/or air drying (wet nesting).
  • Ice in the bar area stored open with no covering.
  • Meatloaf in the walk in cooler area stored uncovered.
  • Commercially processed refrigerated, ready to eat deli meats and cheeses, located in the walk in cooler is not being marked with the date it was opened.
  • Food facility does not have enough outside waste receptacles as evidenced by refuse and waste lying on the ground.
