15 violations, Abyss Coffee in Ambler fails inspection, “Defective hot water faucet with no hot water at the front serving area hand sink”

The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services Office of Public Health (MCOPH) conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on December 11, 2019. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations the Abyss Coffee in Ambler was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 15 violations were found.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • Defective hot water faucet with no hot water at the front serving area hand sink. Follow-up pending on or after 12/12/19. Hot water temperature must be at 100F or higher.
  • No single service towel at the front serving area hand sink.
  • Cooked bacon placed over used empty shell egg cardboard material crates to drain excess grease.
  • Raw scrambled eggs stored at ambient temperature with product temperature of 56F; corrected by disposal.
  • Cooked mushroom and raw leafy spinach stored at ambient temperature; within 1 hour out of temperature control and placed in refrigerator.
  • Using preparation dates or opened date of prepared foods as date marking. Use by date markings, no more than 7 days after opening or preparing foods, are required on ready-to-eat foods or prepared foods, held at the establishment for more than 24 hours and stored under refrigeration.
  • Spray cleaner bottle stored on food handling counter.
  • Food prep sink blocked with board placed across the sink and food preparation at middle rinse compartment of 3-compartment sink.
  • Employee clothing hung on the same storage shelf as single service utensils and food items.
  • Male food handler with no beard restraint.
  • Single service utensil boxes (cup lids, cups)stored on the floor of basement.
  • Single service containers stored with exposed food contact surfaces in kitchen.
  • Exterior dumpster lids left open.
  • Missing electric outlet covers on kitchen wall.
  • Flickering ceiling light in basement storage area.
