15 violations at PJ Whelihan’s Blue Bell; fumbles 11th inspection since September 2016, COVID-19 violations,  Multiple expired items, Chemical spray bottle stored on cooks line, food stored on floor

The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services Office of Public Health (MCOPH) conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on 7/21/2020. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations PJ Whelihan’s in Blue Bell was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 15 violations were found and include one or more violations determined to be food borne illness risk factors.

In the report the inspector wrote:

Upon arrival, inspector noticed multiple employees in kitchen without face masks. Facility complied with mask order after discussion with EHS.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • Facility lacking a current MCOPH CFSM. Facility has 30 business days to submit reciprocity application or submit proof of registration in an approved food safety course.

  • Dish machine final rinse temperature not reaching 180 degrees F. Facility may not use equipment for final sanitation until repaired. Send completion work order stating final rinse temperature to MCOPH.

  • Multiple items in refrigeration observed with expired use by dates. Facility voluntarily discarded.

  • Chemical spray bottle stored on cooks line.

  • Common name label lacking on secondary dry goods containers and squeeze bottles.

  • Containers/boxes of food stored on floor in walk-in freezer.

  • Tongs stored on oven door handle along cooks line.

  • Absorbent cloth lining surface underneath cutting board.

  • Raw wood on bar rail above wash sink.

  • Sliding lid on ice cream freezer damaged. Does not close properly.

  • Facility lacking T-sticks for ware washing machine.

  • 2-bay prep sink draining slowly.

  • Missing floor tile in front of 3-bay warewashing sink.
