The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services Office of Public Health (MCOPH) conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on 7/20/2020. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations The Whitpain Tavern was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 16 violations were found and include one or more violations determined to be food borne illness risk factors.

The inspector made the following statement in the report:

During inspection, multiple employees observed not wearing face masks or wearing them improperly. Facility complied at inspector’s request. Inspector observed customers entering facility without face masks. Hostess seated customers without face masks. Facility provided masks to customers at inspector’s request.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • Improper date marking for shellstock tags after product has been consumed/sold.

  • Deli slicer unclean.

  • Several food items observed with an internal temperature greater that 41F. Facility voluntarily discarded.

  • Secondary containers containing chemical products lacking labels.

  • Chemical bottles stored among food/food contact items.

  • Prep unit across from cooks line with damaged door. Facility must provide repair invoice to MCOPH.

  • Facility thawing frozen fish in reduced oxygen packaging environment.

  • Common name label lacking on secondary dry goods containers and squeeze bottles.

  • Light and air space at bottom/side of door in kitchen.

  • Dead mouse and mouse-like droppings observed in kitchen. Facility has 10 business days to provide MCOPH with pest control report.

  • Bowl/cup used as scoop stored obtain dry goods/food items.

  • Boxes of single service food contact items stored on floor in basement.

  • 4Torn door gasket observed on 3-door reach-in cooler in kitchen.

  • Cardboard lining shelves in multiple locations throughout facility.

  • Racks in walk-in cooler unclean and rusted.

  • Lacking light shield or shatterproof bulb in basement.
