23 violations at Surah Restaurant in Spring House; Roach-like insects observed throughout facility

The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services Office of Public Health (MCOPH) conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on 7/1/2020. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations the Surah Restaurant was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 23 violations were found and include one or more violations determined to be food borne illness risk factors.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • Facility operating without a MCOPH license. Facility has 5 business days to submit license application and appropriate fee.

  • (Repeat x 2) Hand washing sign lacking at hand sink by back door

  • Lacking single service towels for hand sinks.

  • Facility lacking soap at hand sinks.

  • Raw food stored over ready to eat food items in walk-in cooler

  • Proper date marking lacking on prepared food items in secondary containers and/or packaging.

  • Facility lacking visible accurate thermometers in several cold units.

  • Common name label lacking on squeeze bottles at cooks line.

  • Roach-like insect observed throughout facility. Facility has 10 business days to provide proof of next professional pest control treatment to MCOPH

  • Back door propped open upon arrival ( allows access to vermin)

  • Containers/boxes of food stored on floor in walk-in cooler

  • Food stored in plastic grocery bags. (not sanitized)

  • Food handler lacking hair/beard restraint

  • Bowl/cup used as scoop stored obtain dry goods/food items.

  • Tongs stored on oven door handle along cooks line.

  • In-use utensils stored in stagnant water in between uses.

  • Knife stored in space between prep unit and counter.

  • Ice scoop stored on top of ice machine

  • Plastic shipping wrap peeling from Bain Marie on other side of cooks line and ice machine

  • Torn door gasket observed on Bain Marie at cooks line

  • Aluminum foil lining tray at cooks line

  • Absorbent cloth lining surface underneath cutting board.

  • Lacking light shield or shatterproof bulb by walk-in cooler area
