25 violations at Taza Bazaar in West Norriton; Roach-like insect above sink, Trash cans as food prep surfaces, Animal carcass hanging above ready-to-eat foods

The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services Office of Public Health (MCOPH) conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on7/24/2020 following a complaint. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations the Taza Bazaar in West NorritonĀ  was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 25 violations were found and include one or more violations determined to be food borne illness risk factors.

The inspector noted in the report:

MCOPH received complaint that employees of facility were not wearing face masks. Observation: Upon arrival, inspector observed employee at front counter wearing mask below his nose. All other employees wearing masks properly.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • Facility paid for C license. Upon arrival, the inspector noticed the facility is offering retail and take-out food service. Facility has recently added sit-down dining. Facility must apply for CC license from MCOPH.
  • Multiple employee beverages observed on food prep surfaces.
  • Facility lacking soap at hand sink and in women’s rest room.
  • Dry goods stored in open original bags. After opening, items must be moved to secondary dry goods containers.
  • Animal carcass hanging above ready-to-eat foods in walk-in cooler.
  • Samosas measuring 123F. Facility removed items for rapid reheating.
  • 2 times repeat violation: Date marking lacking on food containers in refrigeration.
  • Cleaning product stored among food items.
  • Food stored in opened original aluminum can in walk-in cooler.
  • Common name label lacking on secondary dry goods containers.
  • 2 times repeat violation: Light and air space at bottom of exterior door. (allows access to vermin)
  • Insect control device mounted above food prep surfaces.
  • Roach-like insect observed above 3-bay ware washing sink. Facility has 10 business days to provide proof of next professional pest control treatment to MCOPH
  • Bags of flour stored on floor. Boxes of food and raw chicken stored on floor in walk-in cooler.
  • Facility using trash cans as food prep surfaces in multiple areas.
  • Facility using 3-bay ware washing sink to prepare raw chicken.
  • 5 times repeat violation: Food handler lacking hair/beard restraint.
  • Bowl/cup used as scoop stored obtain dry goods/food items.
  • Dough scraper stored on shelf in walk-in cooler.
  • Torn door gasket observed on walk-in cooler.
  • Desert cooler draining into pitcher on floor. Facility has repair appointment scheduled.
  • Ceiling tiles stained in retail area.
  • Grease build-up on hood filters along cooks line
  • Two gas burners being used outside ANSUL hood system. EHS will contact local fire marshal.
