2nd failed inspection this year, Giuseppe’s Pizza & Family Restaurant, “ice machine observed with black mold-like growth”, 16 violations

The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services Office of Public Health (MCOPH) conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on November 25, 2019. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations Giuseppes Pizza & Family Restaurant in Lansdale was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 16 violations were found.

Giuseppes was found, “Out of Compliance” during an inspection on May 10, 2019, with 14 violations cited.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • (2 times repeat violation) Employee coffee cup stored on prep table in kitchen. Failure to correct and maintain multiple repeat violations may result in further legal action.
  • (2 times repeat violation)Employee personal food stored on prep table in kitchen. Failure to correct and maintain multiple repeat violations may result in further legal action.
  • Wet wiping rags stored on hand washing sink at pizza counter.
  • Raw veal observed stored above cooked foods in walk-in refrigerator.
  • Interior of ice machine observed with black mold-like growth. Facility cleaned and sanitized during inspection.
  • TCS* food items are being stored in an inadequate ice baths in kitchen areas. Foods recorded around 41F during inspection. Facility was instructed on proper ice bath usage during inspection.
  • (4XR)Some prepared and opened TCS* ready to eat foods held in facility longer than 24 hours under refrigeration missing discard date marking not to exceed 7 days from the prep/open date. Foods taken out of freezer are not marked with thawed on date and discard date. Facility was emailed date marking regulations during inspection. Failure to correct and maintain multiple repeat violations may result in further legal action or citation.
  • Two cans of home use pesticide spray found in storage area of prep room. Facility was instructed that only a licensed pest control operator may apply pesticides.
  • (2 times repeat violation)Absorbent paper towels found lining pan of bacon at sandwich prep refrigerator. Failure to correct and maintain multiple repeat violations may result in further legal action.
  • (3 times repeat violation)Facility found to be storing bread ends for toasting in absorbent cardboard material boxes in side prep area directly on floor. Facility voluntarily discarded during inspection. Failure to correct and maintain multiple repeat violations may result in further legal action.
  • Foods observed being stored directly on pallet made floor of walk-in freezer.
  • (2 times repeat violation)Ice scoop handle found resting in ice under lid for bar ice bin. Failure to correct and maintain multiple repeat violations may result in further legal action.
  • Ice scoop stored directly on top of ice machine.
  • (2 times repeat violation)Ice accumulation observed on interior of walk-in freezer on walls and on condenser unit with some food items having ice accumulation. Failure to correct and maintain multiple repeat violations may result in further legal action.
  • Floor around pressure treated pallets in main walk-in refrigerator observed with debris accumulation.
  • (3XR)Ceiling light shields above ware washing area observed damaged. Facility stated that lights are to be replaced next week. Failure to correct and maintain multiple repeat violations may result in further legal action.

*Foods that need time and temperature control for safety—known as TCS foods—include milk and dairy products, eggs, meat (beef, pork, and lamb), poultry, fish, shellfish and crustaceans, baked potatoes, tofu or other soy protein, sprouts and sprout seeds, sliced melons, cut tomatoes, cut leafy greens, untreated garlic.
