38 violations at House of Biryani’s in West Norriton; Fly-like insects observed throughout facility, employee without mask, Unclean kebab skewers stored among clean skewers

The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services Office of Public Health (MCOPH) conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on 8/14/2020. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations House of Biryani’s and Kebab’s was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 38 violations were found and include one or more violations determined to be food borne illness risk factors.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • Facility operating without a MCOPH license. Owner claims he has sent payment to MCOPH.
  • Inspection request signage not posted at time of inspection.
  • Facility lacking soap at hand sink at wait staff station and at end of cooks line.
  • Facility lacking hand soap in men’s and women’s restrooms.
  • Raw chicken stored above ready-to-eat foods in walk-in cooler and in prep unit.
  • Cutting board with heavy discoloration across from ware washing sink.
  • Unclean kebab skewers stored among clean skewers at tandoor.
  • Can opener blade unclean.
  • Hard-boiled eggs stored in steam unit measuring 121F.
  • Hard-boiled eggs in steam unit measuring 121F. Facility moved to stove for rapid reheating.
  • Food items in prep unit with internal temperatures measuring greater than 41F. Facility moved all items to walk-in cooler for cooling.
  • Date marking lacking on food containers in refrigeration.
  • Bottle of cleaning agent stored among clean wares.
  • Facility lacking visible accurate thermometer in walk-in cooler.
  • Facility lacking labels on in-house packaged beverages in retail cooler.
  • Common name label lacking on squeeze bottles at cooks line.
  • Light and airspace at bottom/side of back door.
  • Fly-like insects observed throughout facility. Dead insects observed in light shield in back storage area. Facility has 10 business days to provide proof of next professional pest control treatment to MCOPH.
  • Food containers lacking covers throughout facility.
  • Multiple dry goods items stored in open original bags.
  • Wet wiping cloths not stored in a sanitizing solution.
  • Bowl/cup used as scoop stored obtain dry goods/food items.
  • Tongs stored on handle on side of deep fryer.
  • Facility using foil liner as back splash behind stove. Facility using foil liner on top of milk crates.
  • Absorbent cloth lining surface underneath cutting board.
  • Plastic shipping wrap on equipment in kitchen.
  • Facility using rag on floor to catch drips from deep fryer.
  • Metal racks unclean throughout facility.
  • Front of ice machine unclean.
  • Walls behind prep tables unclean throughout facility.
  • Heavy grease build-up on table containing clean pots next to ware washing sink.
  • Legs unclean on stool behind front counter.
  • Fan guards in walk-in cooler are unclean.
  • Facility lacking hot water under pressure at hand sink at end of cooks line and at wait staff station. Facility has 1 business day to restore hot water under pressure. A follow-up inspection has been scheduled. Failure to correct and maintain violation may result in legal action, including closure.
  • Mop not stored hanging or inverted to dry.
  • Ceiling tile missing above hand sink in men’s restroom.
  • Floor tile damaged in back storage area.
  • Floor unclean under majority of equipment throughout facility.
