The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Food Safety and Laboratory Services conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on 9/1/2020. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations Gerrity’s Supermarket was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 8 violations were found.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • Observed scoop stored in dry product in bakery department with handle touching product. Scoop was removed, cleaned, and sanitized and stored correctly during this inspection.
  • 24 packages of fresh raspberries observed in the produce sales area, moldy and is adulterated. Raspberries were voluntarily discarded during this inspection.
  • Can opener, a food contact surface, was observed to have food residue and was not clean to sight and touch. Can opener was cleaned and sanitized during this inspection.
  • Increased monitoring and oversight by the person-in-charge is necessary due to the number of risk factor items noted during review.
  • Food Employee observed donning single use gloves without a prior hand wash. Employee washed hands before donning gloves after being reminded.
  • Raw eggs stored above food in the bakery walk in cooler. Eggs were moved to the lowest shelf during this inspection.
  • Observed wall fan in bakery prep area, with an accumulation of dust on non-food contact surfaces.
  • Build up of a mold like substance on the black insulation of the drain spout on the refrigeration unit in the meat walk in cooler.
  • Fan guards in deli, produce,bakery,meat and dairy walk in coolers with an accumulation of static dust, in need of cleaning.
