The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Food Safety and Laboratory Services conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on January 3, 2020. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations the Baden Bowl was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 18 violations were found.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • The Person in Charge does not have adequate knowledge of food safety in this food facility as evidenced by this non-compliant inspection.
  • Facility does not have written procedures for employees to follow when responding to an event involving vomitus or fecal matter discharge onto surfaces within the facility. Sample procedures provided that may be adopted as facility policies
  • Observed open packages of hot dogs, lunch meat and cheese, all refrigerated ready to eat time/temperature control for safety food, in the cooler area, were not compliant with date marking by being labeled with a discard or use by date of no more than 7 days, and requires discarding. Previously cited on 1/22/19.
  • Not enough drainboards, utensil racks, or tables to allow for storage of soiled and/or cleaned items before and after cleaning.
  • Observed an accumulation of grease and dirt on the stove and wall surrounding the stove. Violation previously cited on 1/22/19.
  • Facility sells hamburgers. Person-in-charge could not confirm whether or not hamburgers can be served raw or under cooked at the customer’s request. If customers can request under cooked hamburgers, a written consumer advisory (on the menu, table tent, or placard) must provided to the consumer. Until confirmation is received or an advisory put in place, all hamburgers must be served well-done
  • Observed a black biofilm on the interior of the ice machine around the ice deflector, ice storage area and ice maker. Ice machine was turned off and ice discarded. Ice machine may not be used until it has been cleaned and sanitized.
  • Lights are not shielded or shatter proof over the chest freezer and storage shelved in the back storage area.
  • The handwash sink in the kitchen area does not have single use towels, continuous towels, or air drying device.
  • Top of the chest freezer is broken and being held together with duct tape and is in need of repair or replacement.
  • Observed numerous rodent pellets in the back storage area and around the upright freezer near the front counter. This was previously cited on 1/22/19 and resulted in an out-of-compliance inspection. Area must be cleaned and sanitized and monitored for further activity.
  • Food facility does not have a Health Awareness Reporting Procedure for food employees. “Big 6” and Restriction/Exclusion handout provided.
  • Ice that is used in the bar for drinks appears to be used as a coolant for the cold plate and soda lines. The ice used for consumption cannot be used as coolant. Previously cited on 1/22/19.
  • Thermometers for ensuring proper temperature are not available or readily accessible in the True Sliding 2 Door unit.
  • Observed an significant accumulation of grease on the vent hood in the kitchen.
  • Observed tomatoes and onions in the cooler that were slimy to the touch and is adulterated. Product was discarded.
  • Food facility does not have available QAT sanitizer test strips or test kit to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration. Facility has chlorine test strips but is using quatenary ammonio compound as a sanitizer in the bar area.
  • Observed numerous dirty dishes and pots/pans that were not cleaned after the last serving period.
