The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Food Safety and Laboratory Services conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on January 8, 2020. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations the Long John Silver’s A&W Restaurant was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 9 violations were found.

The restaurant failed its regular inspection last year on January 4, 20190 with 8 violations as well as a Follow-up Inspection on January 11, 2019 with 5 violations. After a Type-2 Inspection on January 23, 2019 the restaurant passed with 2 non-food borne violations cite.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • Found a can of whipped cream and maraschino open and to be store under refrigeration, in a cooler with the ambient temp of 68, this includes the food held at 68 °F, rather than 41°F or below as required. This food was thrown out. Do not use this cooler until it has been repaired. 5 days to correct.
  • Hood system is not adequate to remove heat and/or grease, as evidenced by condensate and/or grease collecting on the walls, ceilings, and fixtures due to system lacks filter, this is a repeat violation. 15 days to correct.
  • Fountain drink dispenser equipment in dining room, drain from over flow caught tray does not drain into floor drain, possible drain is clogged, 15 days to correct.
  • Non-food contact surfaces not cleaned at a frequency to preclude accumulation of dirt and old food residue on the following items; menu board above ice cream machine, walk- in cooler floor (under equipment and thresholds), and sweep the spilled food found on walk-in freezer floor, inside front panels of all fryers have heavy grease build up, children high chairs, two crumb baskets located above fryers, inside both hot hold unit (1 located on front serving counter and 1 in the kitchen), 5 days to correct.
  • Food Employee observed changing tasks, placing a used floor mat on the floor and then placing clean soda black nozzles onto the soda fountain machine, that may have contaminated hands without a proper hand wash in-between. Corrected on site.
  • Interior wall panels of walk in cooler walls equipment are worn, holes, rusty, cracked and require repaired/replaced with new stainless wall panels. 60 days to correct.
  • Found walls of mop sink worn out, do not to provide a smooth, non-absorbent, easily cleanable surface, non-porous, 30 days to replace walls/sink.
  • Found several ceiling tiles in the facility need replaced, stained and miss shaped, and need replaced. 15 days to correct.
  • Found ceiling vents are extremely dirty, dusty, and in need of cleaning. 5 days to correct.
