Food safety inspection: Bowl-A-Rena Bowling Lanes not using sanitizer, doesn’t have test strips for their kitchen in Jeannette

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture  conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on January 7, 2020. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations the Bowl-A-Rena Bowling Lanes was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 9 violations were found.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration.
  • Electrical tape around microwave and on door of small refrigerator creating an uneven, hard-to-clean surface. Remove tape and make any necessary repairs.
  • Temperature measuring device for ensuring proper temperature of equipment is not available or readily accessible in 2 prep refrigerators.
  • The food facility is not using an approved detergent-sanitizer in both compartments of the two compartment ware wash sink. No sanitizer is currently being used and only has 2-compartment sink available in prep area.
  • The food facility does not have a hand wash sink located in the food prep/ware washing area. Dedicate one sink for hand washing and stock with soap, towels and a reminder sign.
  • No sign or poster posted at the hand wash sink in the restrooms to remind food employees to wash their hands.
  • Ice scoop at ice machine has cracked and broken handle. Replace.
  • The water temperature of the wash compartment of the manual ware washing equipment was 106°F, rather than not less than 110°F, as required.
  • The handwash sink located in the women’s restroom area does not have water at a temperature of at least 100°F. Water was 85F.
