Grandma’s Grotto in Horsham slapped with 13 violations; “Paint primers and personal medication stored adjacent to facility food ingredient and baking utensils”

The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services Office of Public Health (MCOPH) conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on January 9, 2020. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations randma’s Grottowas cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 13 violations were found.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • No employee handwash reminder sign in women’s toilet room.

  • No date markings on prepared pasta held at the establishment for more than 24 hours; Use by date markings, no more than 7 days after opening or preparing foods, are required on ready-to-eat foods or prepared foods, held at the establishment for more than 24 hours and stored under refrigeration.

  • Paint primers and personal medication stored adjacent to facility food ingredient and baking utensils.

  • Personal clothing stored on top of flour bags and adjacent to facility food ingredients.

  • Bread products stored in plastic grocery shopping bags. (this is not food safe, potential for contamination)

  • Opened cases of canned sodas stored on the floor below front serving counter.

  • Rusted shelves in 1-door glass reach-in refrigerator in kitchen.

  • Front panel of ice machine not in place and exposing mechanical parts of the machine.

  • (5 times repeat violation)-Soda machine drain line drains into front serving area hand sink; re-directed to indirect waste drain inside of cabinetry during the inspection.

  • Exterior dumpster located on the surface of grass; re-locate to impervious surface.

  • (4 times repeat violation)-Damaged floor tiles in side salad/beverage prep room. Failure to provide smooth, non-absorbent and easily cleanable by next routine inspection will lead to further enforcement and/or issuance of citation.

  • Two exhaust filters removed from the exhaust hood during active food preparation; filters were placed in the hood during the inspection.

  • Ceiling fluorescent light above ice machine not shielded or shatter resistant.
