Health Dept slaps Jimmy’s BBQ in Malvern with 9 violations says, “Much of the premises are in need of a thorough cleaning”

The Chester County Health Department conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on January 21, 2020. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations the Jimmy’s BBQ in Malvern was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 9 violations were found.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • Ready-to-eat prepared food in walk in observed undated. Refrigerated ready-to-eat potentially hazardous food prepared and held in the facility must be dated, and discarded within seven days. Commercially prepared ready-to-eat potentially hazardous food must be dated when opened, and consumed or discarded within seven days of opening or the use-by date, whichever comes first.
  • Upside-down plastic soda pallets/milk crates are being used as shelving. Nonfood-contact surfaces shall be free of unnecessary ledges, projections and crevices, and designed and constructed to allow easy cleaning and to facilitate maintenance. Remove, and if replaced replace with NSF-quality dunnage racks to hold items at least six (6) inches off floor within two (2) weeks.
  • Light guards are yellowed. Replace to allow proper lighting. Lighting in prep and ware wash was <15fc rather than the required 20-50 foot candles required.
  • Rear solid door was propped open. Interior screen door has a 4-6 inch gap at the bottom. This door must have no gaps. Repair/replace
  • No test kit to measure the Quaternary sanitizer at the three bay sink. Provide test kit and use to measure the sanitizer concentration every day.

  • Much of the premises are in need of a thorough cleaning, including but not limited to: >Walls next to hood near ceiling >Floor around water heater >in rear area and various other areas >Pipes under three bay sink
  • Discolored ceiling tiles in the prep area and ware washing area must be replaced with solid, cleanable, white tiles in order to maintain cleanliness, monitor for grease build-up and allow for increased lighting.
  • Boxes in the rear hallway must be stored on shelves or dunnage racks off the floor to allow cleaning of the floor.
  • The following are in need of cleaning: >interior of exhaust hood >smoker ventilation duct >pedal next to the smoker >Water heater >Interior of walk-in Clean today and maintain clean
  • Light intensity in the food preparation and warewashing area is 7-10 footcandles. It must be 50 in the prep area and at least 20 in the warewashing area. Replace any burned out lightbulbs in addition to replacing the lightshields.
