The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture  conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on 8/10/2020. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations Ferri’s Shur Save Supermarket was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 7 violations were found.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • Assorted meat items (ham, bacon, hot dogs) were held at 45-50 °F, in the meat display cooler area (bottom row only – remaining rows at temp), rather than 41°F or below as required. Items voluntarily disposed. Do not use cooler until it can mail temperature. (see note below)
  • Old unused equipment / shelving stored in basement area, should be removed from food facility. Repeat violation
  • Observed hot foods stove and chicken fryer in the deli / hot foods area, with encrusted grease and soil accumulation along sides of units and interior oil discharge area. Also, exterior of crock pot unit in hot foods has food residue on nonfood contact surfaces
  • Non-food contact surfaces not cleaned at a frequency to preclude accumulation of dirt and soil. Heavy black residues / old food items observed under the storage table across from the stove in the meat room / deli area and underneath the chicken fryer in the deli.
  • Floor near stove in the hot foods / meat room area is cracked / roughened / and is not a smooth, easily cleanable surface.
  • Prepackaged deli hot foods, hoagies and sandwiches, also some bakery items; are not labeled properly with the ingredient statement (including all sub-ingredients). Repeat violation
  • Ceiling tiles missing in the bakery and deli areas, and need replaced

*The temperature danger zone is food temperatures between 41 and 135 degrees Fahrenheit and the most rapid bacteria growth occurs between 70 and 125 degrees Fahrenheit. The longer food sits in this temperature range, the greater the risk that bacteria will begin to grow on food. These violations are considered, "Food Borne Illness Risk Factor" violations.
