The Allegheny County Health Department’s Food Safety Program conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on 8/8/2020. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations Pittsburgh’s Pa Motor Speedway was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 9 violations were found.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • Slices of yellow cheese, cut watermelon, and funnel cake batter in the single-door upright reach-in cooler in the room adjacent to the concession register found at 51°F. Operator stated that the products were in the unit for an hour and a half. Watermelon moved to a functioning cooler while the cheese and funnel cake batter were used immediately.
  • Upright single-door reach-in cooler in the room adjacent to the concession register found with an internal ambient air temperature of 53°F. Do not use this refrigerator for holding products that require temperature control until the unit can maintain internal food temperatures of 41°F or below.
  • Unidentified pink slime found present on the inside deflector plate (ice machine). Clean and maintain.
  • Hose of unknown origin and purpose draining into the sanitize compartment of the three-bowl sink. Operator instructed to move the hose and drain into the bucket next to the sink.
  • Bar area does not have a hand sink in the room next to the end of the concession area.
  • Facility lacks a certified food protection manager. No names or certificates could be furnished for verification.
  • Multiple bags of ice stored on the floor next to the entryway leading to behind the bar. Operator stated that they use the ice quickly and does not sit around long. Operator instructed to place either into secondary containment or leave them in a freezer until needed.
  • Dog present behind the bar in the corner between the wall and the reach-in sliding door merchandiser.
  • Failure to comply with spacing in the stands. During inspection, the first 6-8 rows, large groups of unrelated persons packed together. Security, that is supposed to be monitoring the social distancing in the stands, observed mostly with their backs towards the stands and watching the race.
  • Failure to enforce mask or facial coverings of guests. Facility has an announcer over the PA system announcing reminders for social distancing and facial covering usage. Multiple guests observed walking from the stands to the concessions and to the restrooms without a facial covering. Employees observed not reminding guests to properly wear their coverings or to remind them to don their facial coverings.
