The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Food Safety and Laboratory Services conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on 7/27/2020. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations Karn’s Quality Foods was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 7 violations were found.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • The Person in Charge does not have adequate knowledge of food safety in this food facility as evidenced by this non-compliant inspection.
  • Observed an employee store an open beverage container in seafood walk-in cooler directly next to and above product.
  • Observed raw ground beef in the beef/pork cooler, open with no cover, stored directly below a refrigeration unit that has dripping condensation. Observed bagged clams in the seafood cooler stored directly below a refrigeration unit that has dripping condensation. Facility management was present during the inspection, and voluntarily disposed of the products during the inspection.
  • Observed raw meat stored in each of the 3 separate meat coolers (chicken, beef/pork, and seafood) stored open with no covering.
  • Observed a gray bin of raw meat stored directly on the floor of the beef/pork walk-in cooler.
  • Unable to verify the frequency at which each deli slicer is being broken down and washed/rinsed/sanitized.
  • Observed standing water and food residue on the floor of the walk-in poultry cooler. Observed old food residue on the walls of the walk-in poultry cooler. Observed old food residue on the floor of the walk-in beef/pork cooler, under the meat grinder. Observed standing water, debris and old food residue on the floor of the walk-in seafood cooler. Observed standing water on the floor just outside of the meat department, under the doorway.
