The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Food Safety and Laboratory Services conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on January 10, 2020. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations the Nittany Lion Inn was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Pennsylvania’s food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 6 violations were found.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • Food facility has a reminder statement on the menu for foods that are / or could be served raw or under cooked to the consumer; however, does not clearly disclose which foods the reminder statement applies to.
  • The wash solution temperature in the muti-tank conveyor, multi-temperature mechanical ware washing equipment was 145 °F, rather than not less then 150°F as required.
  • Observed a heavy accumulation of a brown crusty residue on 3 soda nozzles on the soda machine at the servers station as well as a black, slimy residue on the soda gun nozzle at the bar in Whiskers.
  • Observed an employee rinse a wiping cloth in the hand sink as well as a spoon in the hand sink near walk in front freezer, indicating uses other than hand washing.
  • Plumbing system not maintained in good repair – observed the hand sink leaking in the cold prep area.
  • The hot water used for sanitizing in the mechanical ware washing machine did not reach 180°F. Firm will use 3 bay sink until machine is fixed and working properly.
